Worth every penny

I purchased this TV around the Christmas season when these sorts of things were on sale and I must say I absolutely love it. I don't usually write reviews but after all of the pleasant surprises I have had with this set I felt compelled to write one. First off, I couldn't find anywhere on the box that mentioned that this TV was wireless but there was a wireless dongle included (+1). Assembling the stand was easy so us guys will not need the manual for that step :). I turned it on and it set the clock and it auto-scanned for channels which I canceled since I have an HDMI box attached and I don't care what channels it finds. I personally think the TV looks great. I did watch a Blu-Ray movie on it and I can say that it is not as good as the $2000 sets they have at (insert electronics store name here) but if you sit at a reasonable distance away from it the difference is not large enough to merit spending the extra $1100 in my opinion. I wouldn't have even paid an extra $500 for one of the nicer sets.Since this is a 3D set I had to check out the 3D functionality too of course. I bought a PS3 at the same time that I bought the TV and along with that I bought Call of Duty: Black Ops. I went to play the game and the screen went all blurry on me and I assumed something was wrong with the TV. After about 5 minutes of banging my head against the wall I figured out that the game supported 3D and 3D mode was on. I popped on the glasses and it was like playing an all new game. I have little experience with the 3D scene so I can't preach that this TV is better than TV X, but at the appropriate viewing distance the 3D effects were very crisp and fluid. If you sit too close or too far off to the side you will have double vision. I did watch a 1080p clip of a 3D movie just to see the difference between the game and a high-def movie and my previous statement holds true.This TV also includes a function called SimpLink. It's nothing new or revolutionary because many other TV's have a similar feature but it allows the TV to control other devices like a PS3 through HDMI. Why do you care? Well, PlayStation charges for their media remote. I can use the TV remote to control the Blu-Ray functions and when I turn the TV off it will automatically turn off the PlayStation as well. I believe this is also true of XBOX but don't quote me on that.Another neat feature that I didn't know about when I purchased this device was that LG has published a remote control app in the Android and iPhone markets that allows you to control your TV with the phone. Dorky I know, but cool none the less.I didn't so much care about the SmartTV functions when I bought the TV until I played with them and I was impressed. The TV includes support for Netflix, Vudu, AmazonVOD, Hulu, etc. out of the box. Setting it up was pretty straight forward so long as you know your username and password. The feature I actually liked the most was MediaLink. I have a rather large collection of Music, TV Shows, and Movies on my laptop and previously I've always had to hook it up through HDMI to play any of them but not anymore. After installing a free application on my computer the TV could see all of the shows, movies, and music that I had on my computer. That's not very impressive considering that DLNA could do that anyways but what I was astounded by was that it automatically organized my collection on the TV so I could search by show, season, episode name, etc. It even pulled artwork, episode names, and each episode summary from the web automatically. It also did the same for my movie collection as well. If the media is in a format that the TV can't play it will transcode it on the fly and stream it to the set but it played everything I threw at it by default. DivX, Xvid, X264, H264, etc. You can also copy media files to a flash drive and play them through the USB port on the side of the TV, very nifty.I do have some cons that I would like to point as well. The menu system is kind of complicated and it took me a minute to figure it out. There are many different sets of menus. There is a quick menu that contains your run of the mill picture and audio settings but there is also a full menu that lets you get at some of the more advance features like turning off TruMotion. The full menu can't be accessed with a button on the remote. You have to go in to the SmartTV function and choose settings there. There are also even more settings that can be found in other locations on the TV. You'll see if you buy one. It's not a huge deal but it was an annoyance.The other thing I have to point out is that some of apps are pretty crappy and useless. There's a 3D Zone app from LG that you can install but it has very little content and it seems like the rest of the downloadable stuff is similarly crappy. The Facebook app that is built in works. That's about all I would say about it. It's not awful but it isn't very good either.I'm getting sick of writing. If you haven't made up your mind by now then there is not much else I can do for you. I tried...

This is an update to my earlier review. Now using LGTV for several days. Picture quality is just outstanding. Everything is so natural, you feel like you are in whatever program is showing. The colors and clarity are really extraordinary. I replaced my Sony LCD (6 years old) with this LG LED-LCD and am so happy to have upgraded. From other reviews this set is same as the 47LW5600 just without the local dimming. From my actual observations, I doubt you really need this local dimming as I don't see how you could have any improvement over this 47LW5700 set. The only other thing is the 5600 comes with an aiming remote. But I downloaded a free LG app to my iPhone and now use it to control my TV. So you don't really need the other remote either. The standard remote works fine as well and it comes with the LG57000 set. Be sure to reset your cable box to the 1080i spec. I had to do this with Comcast Motorola box as it was on 720p. Power off - hit menu right away - and the grid comes up on screen to scroll through and change settings to the highest resolution. I really cannot say enough positive things about LG. They've got a great product that I am really enjoying from sports to movies to regular HD TV.Oh, and don't forget the 3D. It's really nice to watch with the passive glasses. No flicker. And no hassle at all. I've watched couple Comcast 3d programs and this is really a nice change from regular TV. But the really great stuff is from the 3D Blu Ray player. Fantastic images, great color, lots of depth and special effects. This is an experience that's the same as going to the movies and watching 3D there. It is totally immersive and enjoyable with the 3D passive glasses from LG. I have no doubt this will be the winning system for 3D for the next several years. It's simple and it works. And you get all the great 3D effects which make watching the programming really fun and more interesting. You can get a real perspective on sports from the Comcast 3d channels and the programming there. And if you want you can even convert 2d to 3D. This works fine and gives you a more "on the field" approach to sports viewing. You'll love it.Just purchased at Costco. Set up a breeze. This LG is excellent. Great picture. Color depth, blacks are black, right out of box. The 3D is really fun to watch. I tried a Comcast program which was fine. Even better a 3D DVD really showed off this set. The passive 3D is the only way to go. No flicker and great resolution. To my eyes this was just like the movie theater. Highly recommended.You will not be at all disappointed with this TV. and the price is outstanding.Will report more as I further use this TV.

After researching passive vs active, observing various brands, I went with LG, specifically the 47LW5700. OMG did I make the right choice!!!The features are fantasic, setup was easy, and the picture (the most important consideration) is absolutely sublime.Random thoughts (some of which may be helpful to others trying to optimize their setup):- Passive 3D. Fugedaboutit. If you are on the fence on active vs passive, STOP. If you haven't seen it yet, go to your local purveyor of TVs and ask them to demo the LG passive 3D. It is brighter than active, less annoying (flicker, eye strain), WAY more convenient and cheap, and twice the frame rate. I bought a bucket of glasses that include clip-ons and even miniature glasses for the little guy. I know that technically I am losing resolution vs active, but trust me - you cannot imagine a more crisp picture on this 47" viewing 8' from my face. Or, you don't have to trust me - just go try it out.- ARC. This is one of the things that I didn't really know to research before buying, but after starting to set things up I found it convenient to run sound originating from the TV (primarily from the built-in VUDU, HULU, and whatever I am perusing over DLNA) without running another cable. It uses the HDMI cable that is installed to run from Bluray to TV. For those of you scratching your head to get this to work, be sure a) the receiver supports ARC, b) the HDMI is on input 1 - it is labeled ARC, and c) you have enabled SIMPhttp://amzn.com/dp/B005I7G856/?tag={bestratecellr-20} on the television. I don't understand why, but enabling helped me stumble on CEC goodness per next point.- Simplink. OK, so I am going out on a limb of what I think I learned on this. As far as I gather, Simplink is the LG implementation of CEC, which lets components control each other through HDMI. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the TV can "talk" to my Bluray/HT system that is Panasonic and has different implementation (Viera link). I know I am only scratching the surface on what CEC can do, but I'm also sure that if I go deeper I would run into incompatibility problems between implementations. I am pleased to be able to press a couple buttons on the TV remote that instructed the system to use the HT sound received via ARC. Also, it is handy to be able to power off the TV and CEC turns off the HT system. Finally - it's only 2012.- The browser is handy. It is cool to be able to bookmark the URL for the webcam in infant's room.- DLNA is also sweet. This is my first experience with this, and find it a bit un-intuitive, but I can tell it is very convenient to be able to serve videos and pictures from the home server (Windows 7 - also WMC server)- Wireless. The TV came with a dongle, but I didn't even try it. My experience is that even with N (802.11n), I experience flaky such that I don't even want to try it.- Smart TV apps. So far, so good. I didn't purchase the TV for these, but have found it WAY more convenient and FAST that the same apps I use from my Samsung Bluray player. The Samsung UI is kludgy, slow, and updates every time I turn it on, and forgets the passwords all the time. The LG UI is much quicker, has never forgotten a password, and even includes some free 3D apps.A couple considerations that I am missing (not really cons, since I knew I wasn't going to get them):- Ethernet over HDMI would be handy. I discounted the value of this when shopping, because I have never really worried about running cables. However, this is the first TV I have hung up on a wall. I'm curious where IP switching occurs in Ethernet-over-hdmi scenarios, but my receiver doesn't support it either, so I'll wonder until my next media setup upgrade.- Magic motion - For some reason I was expecting this out-of-the-box. The TV "supports" it, but you have to buy a kit that includes the remote and a sensor you have to plug in, so BEWARE! You cannot just buy the remote from ebay that came in somebody else's television. You must be sure to acquire the little receiver dongle also.- WMC Extender. I'm guessing there will never be another WMC Extender other than the xbox360 again, but I can dream. After experiencing how fantasitc the built-in apps are and the clutter-free convenience of fewer cables, I am left wishing there was an app to browse WMC content (and take advantage of my quad Ceton tuner) so I didn't have to hook up an xbox that I use for nothing other than WMC client. Heck - I would even be willing to pay the price of the xbox for an app to do this!
